An Intentional Summer

“Nonna, why did you marry Papa John?” This was the question our precious 10 year old granddaughter, Aubrey asked us as we were driving in the car this past weekend.
What precipitated Aubrey asking us such an important question?
We intentionally made special time with her and asked her the following questions:
What was the best part of this past school year?
What was the funniest thing that happened this year?
Was there anyone at school or church that you chose to be kind to and help this year?
What was the hardest part of this past school year?
Did you see God answer any prayers this year?
What are you looking forward to this upcoming year?
After listening to her answers, we asked her if there were any questions she would like to ask us. Thus the question: “Nonna, why did you marry Papa John?”
I wish Aubrey could have seen the smile on my face when she asked me this question.
Here was my answer:
“Well Aubrey, I met your Papa when I was a freshman at Baylor University. I already knew the kind of man I wanted to marry. I had four requirements:
He must love Jesus with his whole heart.
He must be very smart.
He must make me laugh.
He must be cute.
I told Aubrey that Papa John met all those requirements. Her little girl giggles brought joy to our hearts.
What a special memory we made that day discussing how Papa John loved Jesus and sharing with her about our first date.
Take time this summer, whether you are the parent or the grandparent, to ask your children/grandchildren questions and in turn allow them to ask you questions.
Teachable moments happen by living intentionally.
My prayer is that as Aubrey grows she will always remember that conversation.
Decide this summer to live life intentionally.
“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way. And when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7
